CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Nathan

The moment he arrived home at Borson campus, Eleanor tackled him, eager to hear about his weekend with Ben. They headed straight for his room.

“Oh my god, I’m dying over here. You have to tell me how it went.” She slammed the dorm room door shut behind them.

Nathan chuckled at her enthusiasm. He was lucky to have a friend like Eleanor. “It was awesome. Sit down, and I’ll tell you everything.”

“Good, and by everything, you’d better mean everything. Don’t leave out any of the juicy stuff like you did last time.” She grinned, plopping herself down on his secondhand couch.

Nathan took the desk chair next to her and explained how difficult Ben had been to track down. “Imagine being a werewolf at the Vampire Council asking stalker-y questions about their most renowned doctor. It wasn’t any use. They weren’t inclined to help, so I asked for Luther, but they said he wasn’t available. No one bothered to check, though.”

Next, he’d gone to a patient care center. The nurse there had been kind enough to let him know if Dr. Arleth was working, he’d be at his satellite office, not the main branch, so he got back in his truck and headed for the address she’d given him. At this point, he’d lost quite a bit of time already, and the doctor wasn’t at his lab either.

Eleanor chided, “How many hours did you waste when you could have called him?”

“A lot, but I didn’t exactly have much of a plan.”

“That much is obvious. I don’t understand why you didn’t call. You could have saved yourself a whole night’s searching.”

“You’re not wrong. I thought about it. But I fucked things up so bad over the phone last time I was afraid I’d do it again.”

“You’re dumb, Nathan. It would have saved you all that hassle.”

“Anyway, I went to the lab, but they were closing up as I got there. I managed to charm his receptionist, Jeanie, into pointing me toward the Eternal Knight Club, where Ben sometimes goes after work. Seeing as that was my last chance, I went.”

“I can’t imagine you at a nightclub.” Eleanor grinned.

“Yeah, right? At least this wasn’t the crazy loud dancing kind.”

She leaned in. “Please tell me he was there.”

“He was there,” Nathan said with a smile.

“Ugh, finally. Okay, tell me everything.”

Nathan poured the story out to her in a long, excited rush, telling her about Ben’s house, their first date, and just enough about their first time to make himself blush. She listened with a grin, the perfect audience, her happiness for him palpable.

“Here’s the thing I don’t understand,” Eleanor said. “He’s a doctor, a surgeon, no less, but he doesn’t spend his time at the hospital. He spends it at a laboratory. What does he do there? Like what, exactly, is his job?”

“Oh, I guess it’s classified or something. I didn’t really ask about it because he’s not allowed to discuss it,” Nathan said.

“And that doesn’t weird you out at all?”

“No. I mean, why should it?”

“I don’t know.
